American Missionaries and China Modern Education

Abstract

American missionaries have played an important role in the development of education in Modern China. American missionaries played many missionary activities in China, at the same time, they not only founded lots of church schools and enrolled students, but also formed the teaching system from primary to university, What was more important, it accelerated the development of modern Chinese Government education; They established schools for girls and developed the education of Chinese Modern Woman. These activities were beneficial to promote the Chinese modern women's liberation and awakening movement. They helped Chinese students to study overseas and opened up the process of Chinese students going outside.  Due to the need of the Westernization Movement, they translated a large number of western works, not only introduced Western social sciences and natural sciences knowledge into China, but also expanded the Chinese people's “Western” perspective.
