A New Research of Modern Chinese People’s Understanding of Jews

Abstract

From the end of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, it was the most important period for modern Chinese people to understand Jews, and it was also the most practical period for Chinese to face Jewish question in the past century. Chinese people’s understanding of Jews began with the perspective of Christian missionary, the introduction of Kaifeng Jews and the knowledge of diplomat. In terms of content, on the one hand, most Chinese newspapers and periodicals sympathize with the historical and realistic experiences of Jews, especially in the news related to the anti-Semitism of Czar Russia, the anti-Semitism of Nazi Germany and the Jewish refugees in Shanghai. On the other hand, influenced by the world anti-Semitic thought, some newspapers and periodicals connect Jews with money and control of news, and then connect Jews with controlling the world, which is also the understanding characteristics of modern Chinese people to Jews. There were a few prejudices against Jews and even anti-Semitism in modern Chinese newspapers and periodicals.
